Taking the next step in its broad program of support for Nepal’s recovery following April’s devastating earthquake, United Church of Christ Disaster Ministries has set the goal of building 50 earthquake-resistant, permanent homes in that South Asian country. Each house will cost about $4,000. UCC Disaster Ministries already has sent $50,000 to its partner, The Fuller Center for Housing, a Christian faith-based ministry, to begin the first 12 homes.
Severe flooding in South Carolina and Texas, wildfires in California – there are so many U.S. disaster response needs right now. UCC Disaster Ministries has responded to requests for solidarity grants from wildfire-affected congregations in California and, just this week, from Garden of Grace UCC in Columbia, S.C., which has collected hundreds of pounds of clothing, food, toiletries and other items for evacuation shelters and is assisting four flooded families with cleanup and recovery. In addition, UCC Disaster Ministries is deploying long-term recovery volunteer Betzi Yungclas to Texas to help flood-affected people rebuild their homes and lives. Support these and other domestic response efforts through the Emergency USA Fund.
Each year in the United States hundreds of disasters occur. Some disasters are large enough to make the news but often dozens of smaller disasters escape media attention. The Emergency USA Fund allows UCC Disaster Ministries to respond to both large and small natural and human caused disasters in all 50 U.S. States and territories.

Saturday April 25th a major 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal causing loss of life and significant damage and destruction in Kathmandu and surrounding areas. It is expected that the death toll will continue to rise as many poorly constructed buildings collapsed in heavily populated areas. While search and rescue operations are underway reports indicate the need for additional rescue crews, food, water, medical supplies and shelter. Information is limited due to damaged communications infrastructure and impacted humanitarian staff and officials. UCC Disaster Ministries will be supporting ACT Alliance partners in response and recovery and is asking individuals to be in prayer for survivors and relief workers. To donate to Nepal recovery please give to the UCC International Emergency Relief Fund. Written by Zach Wolgemuth
