In Memory of D-Day, June 6, 1944:
Rev. Russell H. McConnell (1908-2000) was the pastor of First Congregational Church of Charlotte, MI from 1935-1942 and 1945-1950, The three year gap was a leave of absence that he took from the church to serve as a Navy Chaplain during World War Two. His prayer, a protestant Communion prayer, was broadcast over all the ships with landing craft that took part in Operation Overlord, the D-Day invasion of Normandy. He served at Omaha Beach and later at Okinawa. He is pictured here in his navy uniform as a Lieutenant (junior grade) in April of 1943, the night before he shipped out.
